The deadline for most counties in Georgia to file for your Homestead Exemption is April 1st. This Exemption is generally only available for those people that owned their home on January 1st of that year and were occupying the property as their primary residence.
Homestead Exemptions were enacted to help homeowners save on their property taxes. The Exemption is deducted from the property taxes of the qualified property and the amount varies from county to county. For example, lets say that your property value is $200,000 and the exemption is 20% you would be paying taxes on a reduced value of $160,000 (20% off of $200,000).
